God uses great sinners to be great evangelists! John highlights Peter and Thomas at the top of his list of ‘fishermen’ in John 21:2 even though they had been the most prominent sinners in the last three chapters of his narrative. And everyone on that boat was needed for a successful great commission. God needs bold Peters, contemplative Johns, thunderous James, honest Nathaniels, and even the unnamed servants. The only time the Sea of Galilee is exclusively called the Sea of Tiberias is in John 21 after Jesus has risen from the dead. The reason for this name change likely has to do with the fact that the disciples at that point were called to move beyond the boundaries of Israel into the whole world! In Jesus’s last miracle before His ascension He does the same thing He initially called Peter, Andrew, James, and John into ministry—He gives them a massive catch of fish after they had caught nothing all night! Jesus specifically told His disciples to go to Galilee so He could reaffirm their ministry call and restore them! Just like Jesus was not done with His disciple when they failed, so He is not done with you! We have arrived at the end of the Gospel of John! In this last chapter the Resurrected Christ has an encounter with seven of His disciples on the Sea of Galilee. The same place where He had called four of these same men to follow Him at the beginning of His ministry. In this story He re-affirms their call and shows them that He would continue to be their provision and the source of all of their success in ministry. On top of that, Jesus serves them a breakfast He had cooked for them as they spend time together fellowshipping while the sun rises over the sea. There are so many powerful lessons in this story for you and me! Join us!
One way Jesus was sent was to minister life to the broken. He said He doesn’t break what's already bruised or snuff out what's barely burning. This sort of gentleness and kindness is an aspect of Jesus’s ministry must be an aspect of ours as well. “He breathed on them, and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit’” (John 20:22). The Greek word translated “breathed” here is used only once in the New Testament. It is the same word in the Greek Old Testament in Genesis 2:7 when God “breathed” the breath of life into Adam. What Jesus was doing here was breathing new creation life into His disciples! It was a ‘born again’ moment! An entrance into new, heavenly, spiritual life! Jesus is still breathing the Holy Spirit into people today. Receive His breath of Life!
